C. Joel Sprague, P.E.
Formerly an independent consultant with Sprague & Sprague but now providing senior technical leadership at TRI Environmental, Joel specializes in research, development, testing, and application of geosynthetics, corrugated plastic pipe, and erosion and sediment control technologies. Joel has served in various capacities in numerous professional organizations and is a regular contributor to conferences and publications. He is actively involved in the development of international standards for testing and specifying construction materials through ASTM. As such, he is Chair of the Erosion and Sediment Control Subcommittee of ASTM’s Committee D35 on Geosynthetics and the initiator of numerous test methods in ASTM’s D18.25 Subcommittee on Erosion and Sediment Control.
Joel has been recognized for his leadership in the development of international standards related to erosion and sediment control technologies. He received the Richard S. Ladd Standards Development Award for his work on standards D 6461 and D 6462 on Silt Fence Materials and Installation, respectively. In 2003, he received the 2003 Award for Outstanding Article on the Practice of Geotechnical Testing for his paper titled, “Development of RECP Performance Test Methods” in ASTM’s Geotechnical Testing Journal. Also, Mr. Sprague was awarded IECA’s Most Distinguished Technical Paper Award 2007 for his paper titled “Slope Erosion Testing – Identifying “Critical” Parameters”.
He has also been an instructor of numerous short courses and authored over 50 articles and technical papers on the development, testing, and application of geosynthetics, rolled erosion control products, and sediment control systems.
